SAN ANTONIO --

Two San Antonio police helicopter pilots were involved in a shooting Monday night that injured one man and sent three other people, including the two pilots, to the hospital.

Around 7 p.m., the pilots were stopped at a gas station at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue at SE Military Drive, when one was approached by an elderly man asking for help.

The man claimed three men were harassing him. The pilot, who was dressed in a San Antonio police uniform, confronted the men and two attacked him, police said.

The pilot managed to restrain one of men while the other two fled in a vehicle, police said.

Moments later, one of the men returned and began circling the parking lot in his vehicle. While circling, the man struck a woman who was attempting to help the officer. It was then, police said, that the other pilot emerged from the store with his weapon drawn.

That pilot ordered the man out of his vehicle, police said, but the man sped toward the officer, who fired two shots at the car.

Police said the man struck the officer, knocking him down, and began to back up. While on the ground, the officer fired a third shot at the man, striking him in his arm. While still in reverse, the man's car collided with another car.

The two men were taken into police custody and the third remained at large Monday night.

The pilots and the woman were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The injured man was treated at the scene and detained for questioning.

"It's pretty outrageous," said witness Jesse Corrales. "You don't think about this (kind of thing) happening in a well-patrolled area like this."
