YORK — Authorities in South Carolina are investigating the death of former York mayor Melvin Roberts. York County Coroner Sabrina Gast says the body of the 78-year-old Roberts was found in a driveway behind his home about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Gast says authorities are treating the death as a homicide, but would not release any details as to the manner of his death. York police did not immediately return phone messages Friday seeking information on the investigation. The Charlotte Observer reported that Roberts was a popular defense attorney for a half century. He served on York city council in the 1960s and was elected to a two-year term as mayor in 1972.
