Boy, 14, accused of off-campus shooting

The Post and Courier
Saturday, February 6, 2010

A 17-year-old student at Daniel Jenkins Academy in North Charleston was shot to death Friday, and a 14-year-old boy is the accused triggerman.

Larry Maybank of North Charleston, was found about 12:30 p.m. after North Charleston police were dispatched to a report of shots fired on Bonds Avenue, just off Dorchester Road.

Officers found Maybank lying near the street, bleeding. He was rushed by Charleston County EMS to Medical University Hospital, where he died at 1:30 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said.

Spencer Pryor, police public information officer, said witnesses reported seeing three black males running from the scene toward Henry Street. North Charleston police officers swarmed the Murray Hill neighborhood with dogs in search of the suspects, but no one had been found after several hours.

Investigators questioned witnesses and later identified a suspect, Pryor said. The 14-year-old boy, whose name was withheld because of his age, was being held by the state Department of Juvenile Justice and will have a detention hearing in Family Court next week, Pryor said.

The shooting may have stemmed from a previous altercation between from the scene toward Henry Street. North Charleston police officers swarmed the Murray Hill neighborhood with dogs in search of the suspects, but no one had been found after several hours.

School district officials said support and counseling will be offered to students and faculty at Daniel Jenkins Academy. Classes at the school will be suspended Monday, according to a statement issued by the district. Monday classes also are suspended for students in the GED and "Summit" programs, according to the statement. Faculty members were to report to school Monday, while students were to return Tuesday.

"We are so sorry to hear about this tragic loss," said Charleston County School District superintendent Nancy McGinley in the news release. "Every student we serve is part of the CCSD family. I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this student."

School officials planned to meet today with police Chief Jon Zumalt and others, the statement said.

Schools in the area went into administrative lockdown soon after the shooting Friday. Dismissal times for students at Daniel Jenkins Academy and at Burns Elementary School were not changed, but the school district asked that parents of students who walked to homes in the Murray Hill neighborhood pick up their children at school.

Daniel Jenkins Academy was formerly known as Murray Hill Academy. The district changed the name of the school and took control of it from a private company in 2008 in hopes of improving academic growth. It serves sixth- through 10th-grade students from across the county who had been recommended for expulsion but instead were offered admittance to the school.
