The pilot, who was dressed in a San Antonio police uniform, confronted the men and two attacked him, police said.

The pilot managed to restrain one of men while the other two fled in a vehicle, police said.

Moments later, one of the men returned and began circling the parking lot in his vehicle. While circling, the man struck a woman who was attempting to help the officer. It was then, police said, that the other pilot emerged from the store with his weapon drawn.

That pilot ordered the man out of his vehicle, police said, but the man sped toward the officer, who fired two shots at the car.

Police said the man struck the officer, knocking him down, and began to back up. While on the ground, the officer fired a third shot at the man, striking him in his arm. While still in reverse, the man's car collided with another car.

The two men were taken into police custody and the third remained at large Monday night.

The pilots and the woman were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The injured man was treated at the scene and detained for questioning.

"It's pretty outrageous," said witness Jesse Corrales. A suspect was taken into custody.

The shooting was first reported at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, university Police Chief Paul Denton said at a news conference. The two wounded workers were taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where one was in critical condition and the other was in stable condition, he said. The third employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

Heavily armed campus officers searched buildings in the area, including a university power plant, and the person who police believe was responsible for the shooting was taken into custody, Denton said.

Police did not release any names. Investigators were trying to determine the suspect's motive, Denton said.

Ohio State, the nation's largest university, said no students were hurt and that classes would be held as scheduled.

"This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to all of the families," said Vernon Baisden, a university assistant vice president of public safety.

Graduate student Kiernan Gordon, 31, said he found out about the shooting from his wife, who called him on his cell phone while he was driving to campus. He said he didn't have any concerns about his own safety.

"Ohio State is really a city unto itself, and like any city it has problems unto itself," Gordon said.

The maintenance building where the shooting occurred is just east of Ohio Stadium, where the school's football team plays.

Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. PT>
By MATTHEW BARAKAT
Associated Press Writer

     ARLINGTON, Va. --

There were no obvious signs of trouble when gunman John Patrick Bedell approached a Pentagon security checkpoint Thursday night. But Pentagon police officer Marvin Carraway had seen that facial expression before. It betrayed Bedell's intentions.

"It's hard to describe that look," Carraway said in an interview Monday. "It's a look you would know if you had been in combat."

Carraway was one of three officers who returned fire after Bedell began shooting at them. Carraway and another officer, Jeffery Amos, suffered minor injuries. The officers fatally wounded Bedell, who was described as having a history of mental illness by his family.

The shooting is still under investigation, but Pentagon police chief Richard Keevill has said the officers responded appropriately to the threat.

"The system definitely worked," said Terry Sutherland, spokesman for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency. "The bottom line is these guys did their jobs."

The three officers - Carraway, 44, of Clinton, Md.; Amos, 46, of Woodbridge; and Colin Richards, 29, of Alexandria, all described the experience in similar terms. They said time seemed to slow down, and their training kicked in.

"When the shooter started running, he looked like a big target. At that point, I felt like I couldn't miss," said Richards, who was next to Carraway when the shooting occurred, not far from the Pentagon Metro station. "My vision was, like, big. My hearing - I could hear everything."

Carraway was grazed in the leg when Bedell opened fire on him from what was essentially point-blank range. Amos, who was a short distance away, responded when he heard the gunshot, and he was struck by a bullet in the right shoulder. Neither was seriously injured.

Carraway acknowledged that he was in fortunate not to have been more seriously injured. More than good fortune, though, Carraway believes the officers' training is the primary reason they successfully stopped Bedell.

Carraway, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the first Persian Gulf War, said he had been shot at before. Recognizing the look on Bedell's face as a potential danger gave him moments to prepare. Bedell, who did not speak during the confrontation, opened fire first, but Carraway was able to quickly take cover and return fire.

"My training and my experience - that prevailed," he said.

The officers say they are well aware that the Pentagon is a potential target and that they are the first line of defense. Amos said he is glad that he and the other officers were able to prevent a situation like what occurred last year at Fort Hood, where Maj. Nidal Hasan is charged with 13 counts of murder following a shooting spree on the Army post.

"We couldn't let this guy get into the Pentagon, fearing that the same situation may occur," Amos said. "Our training kicked in, and that's what we're trained to do - stop the threat."

Bedell, 36, left behind a stream of anti-government rants and conspiracy theories involving the U.S. military. He was a graduate student in electrical engineering at San Jose State University.

Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes...it wasn't stopping, it wasn't doing anything and it just kept speeding up," Sikes said, adding he could smell the brakes burning he was pressing the pedal so hard.

A patrol car pulled alongside the Prius and officers told Sikes over a loudspeaker to push the brake pedal to the floor and apply the emergency brake.

"They also got it going on a steep upgrade," said Officer Jesse Udovich. "Between those three things, they got it to slow down."

After the car decelerated to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and coasted to a halt.

The officer then maneuvered his car in front of the Prius as a precautionary block, Udovich said.

In a statement, Toyota said it has dispatched a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the incident.

Toyota has recalled some 8.5 million vehicles worldwide - more than 6 million in the United States - since last fall because of acceleration problems in multiple models and braking issues in the Prius.

Toyota owners have complained of their vehicles speeding out of control despite efforts to slow down, sometimes resulting in deadly crashes. PT>
BY SUSAN NICOL KYLE
Officer.com News

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Before President Barack Obama or other dignitaries take the stage, tour a factory or walk through a scorched field, a team led by the Secret Service has a myriad of plans in place.

The success of the team's work -- a safe visit -- isn't possible without the cooperation of local fire, EMS and law enforcement, SS Specialist David Lebowitz said during a session at EMS Today last week.

It's the Secret Service's job to not only protect the presidential administration and their families, but visiting heads of state or other governments as well as provide security details for other special events.

Several days before a scheduled visit, an advance team arrives to begin preparation. Lebowitz joked that they don't come in under the cover of darkness. The sudden appearance of a convoy of black SUVs in small town USA gives them away instantly.

"We bring lots of equipment," he joked, adding that word gets out quickly when they hit town.

Lebowitz said the expertise and knowledge of local personnel is tapped early on. The advance teams depend on cooperation to achieve the mission.

Although there are a number of issues that will be addressed by a number of people over the days before the visit, the person designated as the trip lead will be the point of contact for everything.

"There's a one voice policy," he said, adding that it eliminates the possibility of conflicting messages

The Secret Service works with local police officers to assess possible threats as well as vulnerability issues.

Lebowitz, a member of the technical security division, said the team looks at such things as structural integrity, environmental issues and electronic security.

Steering committees are established as well as sub-committees as authorities plan for the visit.

When EMS personnel and ambulances from outside the jurisdiction are requested, they also bring challenges as well. As in Washington, D.C. during the inauguration and in Philadelphia recently, crews may not be familiar with the area.

That usually involves a local EMS person or firefighter being assigned to each unit.

Lebowitz said the Secret Service appreciates the cooperation. "The interaction has been phenomenal..."

While the government won't be paying for overtime for career personnel, there are other caveats. Being part of the advance team has opened doors for local personnel who may have been unsuccessful in gaining access to a building or complex.

Life safety is paramount for everyone attending the event. "We are not going to turn off the fire alarms," he assured the crowd. However, people will likely be assigned to monitor various parts of the building.

Lebowitz encouraged personnel to take advantage of the opportunity should one present itself.

	<div cla

http://www.officer.com/web/online/Top-News-Stories/Secret-Service-Member--Coordination-is-Vital--/1$51081
